When a Topstep trading journal beats the one built into TopstepX

Last reviewed November 5, 2026

This is for Topstep traders, which means TopstepX traders, looking at whether a separate journal is worth it. Often it isn't: Topstep's Trader Journal is free and sits right in the platform. If you do want one, UpSkalr's TopstepX trading journal import reads the Orders export, not Trades, and the rest of this page covers when it earns its place.

Start with what Topstep already gives you

Topstep's platform article describes a Trader Journal inside the Performance Dashboard, for emotions, notes and observations. It's desktop only and covers Practice, Trading Combine and Express Funded accounts. If notes beside your trades are all you're after, use it and close this tab.

That article doesn't mention copier-aware stats, a sizing plan or a psychology curriculum, though it isn't a full feature list, so check your dashboard. UpSkalr's case is those three things: a copied trade counted as one decision, a contract ladder from your own risk rule, and Avyras plus a psychology course working from your record. It also holds accounts from other firms and platforms beside your Topstep ones.

Export Orders, not Trades

Guides for other journals say to export Trades, and for those tools that may be fine. UpSkalr refuses that file because it has no account column. Orders holds every fill with its account name, plus your stops and targets.

  1. Pick the account at the top left. Each export is one account.
  2. Click the Orders tab at the bottom of the page.
  3. Click Export.
  4. Choose whole trading days that start and end flat, then click Export again. A confirmation appears at the bottom left.
  5. Repeat for each account.
  6. In UpSkalr, open Settings, Data Management, Add Historical Data, then Import from Tradovate, TopstepX or Rithmic. Drop in every file at once.
  7. Check the costs on the review screen, then import.

The export has no fees in it, so each fill is charged half of a round-turn cost that you can edit. Defaults follow Topstep's published rates (dated September 30, 2026): ES and NQ $3.78, MES and MNQ $1.22. YM, MYM, RTY and M2K need a cost typed in. On one check across 5 copier accounts, fills rebuilt from Orders matched TopstepX's own Trades export to the cent, so compare your first day too.

Max per payout, standard path$2,000$3,000$5,000Payout article
Max per payout, consistency path$3,000$4,000$6,000Payout article
  • The MLL trails your end-of-day balance, never moves down, and is monitored in real time including unrealized P&L. It locks at the starting balance. An Express Funded account starts at $0 and locks at $0 once the balance reaches the MLL amount. After the first payout the MLL is $0. A Combine breach liquidates you and needs a Reset. An Express Funded breach closes the account, though Back2Funded may apply.
  • Payout paths: standard needs 5 days of $150 or more net, not consecutive. Consistency needs 3 trading days with your largest day at 40% or less of net profit. Both pay up to 50% of balance with a $125 minimum at a 90/10 split. You pick at activation and can't change it. That article also allows 5 active Express Funded accounts.
  • Scaling: the Express Funded limit moves with balance, micros and minis count 10:1, and a higher limit starts the next session. The tiers are in Topstep's chart. We couldn't read the image, so we don't repeat them.

Profit targets aren't here because they weren't in the text of the articles we read. Topstep's articles also word the consistency rule differently: one says best day below 55% "of your Profit Target", and the consistency article (September 17, 2026) says 55% of total profit and works examples. We use that one.

Topstep's consistency formula, worked through

Setup: A 50K Combine. Three winning days of $400, $1,800 and $600, so total profit is $2,800.

  1. Step 1, best day share: $1,800 / $2,800 = 64.3%. That's over 55%, so the target rises.
  2. Step 2, new target: $1,800 / 0.55 = $3,273, the figure in Topstep's own example.
  3. Step 3, what's left: $3,273 - $2,800 = $473, and it has to come from a different day.

Result: You need $473 more on another day. Making that $1,800 day bigger would've raised the bar, not cleared it.

Change one number

Make the best day $2,400. Total is $3,400, and $2,400 / 0.55 = $4,364, so you now need $964 more. Each extra dollar on your best day adds about $1.82 to the total you need. A monster day can push the finish line away from you.

What UpSkalr does with those rules, and what it doesn't

Topstep ruleUpSkalr today
MLL distanceRoom to breach, an end-of-day estimate after an import. Its lock at start matches Topstep's, so this firm is the closest fit. The post-payout reset to $0 isn't modeled, and it's never a live guard.
Best day %, 55% and 40%Not calculated. Best Day shows in Portfolio, so you do the math above.
Target, $150 days, scaling tier, daily lossNot tracked. A target shows as preset text, a daily limit is your own, and UpSkalr's ladder doesn't know the firm's cap.
Copied tradesOne trade split across sub-accounts, for entries within 10 seconds on the same contract, direction and day. A copier lagging across back-to-back trades can pair a leg with the wrong trade: day totals hold, the split can be off.
  • File upload only, with no auto-sync and no use of Topstep's separately billed API. New sessions need another export or manual entry.
  • Eight contracts: ES, MES, NQ, MNQ, YM, MYM, RTY and M2K. Others are left out.
  • After import, total P/L, the split, direction, instrument, times and date are read-only. Your notes and grades aren't. To fix a broker figure, delete that day's trades and import again.
  • A day with manual entries is never overwritten. Re-importing can't double count a fill.
  • Stop distance and R are estimated from your first protective stop and labeled so. The export shows only a stop's final price, so a moved stop makes the estimate wrong.

A firm's maximum isn't a plan

A 50K Combine can hold 5 minis against a $2,000 MLL. On an 8-point ES stop, that's 8 x $50 x 5 = $2,000, the whole limit on one trade. UpSkalr's ladder at Conservative settings (1% risk, 2% target, 3% daily loss, balanced style) puts that account on 1 MES with a 4.0-point stop and $20 at risk, reaching 2 MES at +$6,000. That stop is under the 6-point minimum only because you can't trade less than one contract, so don't read it as safe. It's what your percents allow, not proof of an edge. The drawdown calculator works the floor.

Common mistakes

  • Exporting Trades because another journal's guide said to.
  • Forgetting to switch accounts between exports.
  • Renaming an account between imports. It shows up as new and unlinked, and has to be mapped again.
  • Copying rule figures from other sites. Some state the consistency rule against the target instead of total profit.

The futures journal comparison covers other tools, and the Rithmic page covers accounts elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I export Orders or Trades from TopstepX?

For UpSkalr, Orders. The Trades export has no account column, so UpSkalr recognizes it and leaves it out. Guides written for other journals often say Trades, so it's easy to arrive with the wrong file.

Is Topstep's built-in Trader Journal enough?

It can be. If you want to record emotions, notes and observations beside your Topstep trades on desktop, it's free and already there. A separate journal earns its place if you run copied accounts, want a size ladder from your own risk rule, or want coaching and a psychology course around the record.

Does UpSkalr track Topstep's consistency target?

No. It doesn't calculate the 55% or 40% ratios, count $150 days or follow your scaling tier. Topstep's dashboard is the source of truth for all of it.

Try it on a week of Orders

If the built-in journal isn't covering you, export a week of Orders and see what comes back. The trial is 7 days with no card. Basic's 5 sub-accounts match Topstep's 5 active Express Funded accounts (plans).
